Happy birthday, Gi!

A decade ago, I held you in my arms for the first time.  Oh, I was a mom long before of course, your older brother that went to heaven far too soon taught me that.  But it is a powerful something to hold a wriggling and squirmy baby to my face and breathe you in like so many flowers blossoming.  To hold you to my breast and nurse you, clumsily of course.

A decade ago.

And now you are here, so very far from there.  Independent and confident and adventurous.  You don’t cry when you’re away from me as you used to, but you accept any affection gladly.  Just tonight you asked me to lie with you for a minute as you were falling asleep, and I almost resisted.  But then I remembered those little baby snuggles and I thought you might be feeling a little vulnerable too, on the cusp of your second decade of life.

As we shopped and got your hair cut today, as we chatted and you helped me with the baby, as you showed more maturity than I ever dreamed possible, it really hit me how grown up you are.

I hope you continue to grow into the person God is calling you to be.  I pray for you every day, sweet Gianna, and I’m so blessed that God let me be your mama. Happy birthday!

  2. Oh gosh, if I feel like my kids are getting “old” at 6 and 4, I don’t even know what kind of wreck I’ll be when they hit 10! What a beautiful, precious girl 🙂 Happy Birthday!
