First Holy Communion

There is so much I want to say about Gianna’s First Holy Communion yesterday. The Mass itself was a time of pure beauty and high, high emotion.  If you know me, you know that I cry at the drop of a hat.  But this was more.  So much more.  To see Gianna encounter the true presence of Christ for the first time was mind-blowing.  Suddenly, a huge burden was lifted from me that I didn’t even know I was carrying.  I think I could write about it for days, and perhaps I will someday soon, but what it boiled down to was very simple.  All of the sudden I realized that it wasn’t just me doing the shaping and forming of Gianna’s faith anymore.  I know, of course, that it never was, and Gianna has always had a close personal relationship with Jesus.  But now, every week, and hopefully more often, she will encounter the actual Christ and it will nourish her in a way that I never will be able to.  I’m so so happy for her, but also for me, because I need that support as much as any parent out there.

Whew.  On to the pictures.  There were no photos allowed during Mass, which I was bummed about at first, but it did allow me to put down the camera and pray, so that was good.  These pictures are from before and after.  Excuse the artistic filters.  I was having fun on iPiccy tonight.

First Communion

In case I forgot to mention it, my mom ended up making Gianna's dress. I made the flower: blue for our Blessed Mother. :)

First Communion Cake

Lookie what we have here. A cake that I didn’t totally botch and spent all of $10 making. Take that, Pinterest.

That’s all, for now, friends!  I’m 8 chapters in to Jennifer Fulwiler’s brand new book Something Other Than God and I may not surface until I’m done.  It’s that good.

  12. What JOY!! I blubbered like a baby on Sunday at our parish first holy communion, and I didn’t even have a child there. To see each little soul receive Jesus for the first time is too, too much wonderful to take in!! I love Gianna’s dress – the blue rosette is PERFECT!! What a day you will treasure forever!!
