Quick Takes about Netflix, my brother and the pope, and Christmas

1. Trying to beat the clock, yet again.

Eek.  7 Quick Takes on a Sunday?  Will I make it in time?  Who knows?  (Oh, wait, I just checked.  Kelly is giving us 2 whole extra days to add links! Yay for Kelly as our new SQT hostess!) (Love you, Jen.)

I haven’t blogged in over a week.  It’s not unheard of, for me, but it’s longer than I like.  Over the past couple of days I’ve been contemplating my reasons for blogging less frequently.  Sometimes it’s because Kevin and I have family business (budgeting, online Christmas shopping) to attend to at night (when I usually blog), other times it’s because I just want to read a book or spend time with him.  Add all that to the narcotic smell of a newborn baby in my arms and something has to give, obviously.

At still other times, I have to be honest, I’m just being lazy.  I’ve decided to let go of all guilt about not blogging as much, so long as it’s not out of laziness.  Which brings me to…

2. Gran Hotel

I’ve started a ridiculous new series on Netflix called Gran Hotel.   And when I say ridiculous, I mean totally awesome.  Think: the manners and fashion of Downton meets the drama and hysteria of a telenovela.  Hola?  Maravillosa!

The absurd part: it is so easy to just go from one episode to the next and all of the sudden 3 hours of my life are gone… Kendra tried to warn me off of GH, but it was too late.  I was already hooked.  Kevin and I are now speaking Spanish fluently(ish) to each other  (convenient this time of year when I need to talk about all sorts of gifts and surprises and don’t want the kids to understand), and I’m doing my best to incorporate the Castilian accent I had when I moved back from Spain.  Grathias, El Gran Hotel.  Eres mi vida.

Netflix, you are like a drug.  I love you, but I’m going to have to quit you.

Riiiiiight after my next fix.

3. In case you missed my Facebook bragging…

On the left is Pope Francis, obvi.

The altar server on the right is my youngest brother.  HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?!?!?

Pray for vocations, guys.  We need more awesome seminarians like my brother.

4. I need your Christmas gift ideas

for my girls?  We’ve got the boys covered.  Here are some of the highlights…

For the boys:

And here’s what we’ve gotten for the girls:

Girls Collage

We “do” Santa, but we don’t make a big deal about it, really.  We don’t write letters or ask him for things.  But each child gets one “big” gift from Santa.  The boys are getting their bikes (Wicked awesome sales, people.  The only way to go.) but I’m not really sure what to get the girls.  They’re 7 and 9.  Ideas welcome!

5. Speaking of gifts…

If you have any last-minute shopping left and would like to use my Amazon Affiliates link (you can also use the widget on the right there), I’ll get a few pennies from your purchase.  Or, you can shop through Amazon Smile program to benefit your favorite charity.  OR, you can shop Amazon (and a lot of other sites as well) via Ebates and get money back fo’ yo’self.

Whatever you do, do NOT simply shop Amazon.  The idea of all that wasted money actually hurts me.

6. Christmas Cards

… may or may not happen this year.  But if they do, they’re going to be sent in the actual Christmas season (as in, after Advent) because I haven’t had the kids sit for a photo since Rosalie was born.  Hoping to get a good shot while we’re up at my parents’ house for Christmas.

Do you send cards?  Got any tips for someone who needs shortcuts galore this year?

Last year’s shot:

7. So much to say…

but I have a meeting with my charter school education specialist tomorrow.  Time to get crackin’ on some homeschool planning!

But before I go: gratuitous baby photo:

Lawd have mercy, but this baby is gorgeous. She also looks stoned when I put her in the bath. Chiiiiiiiillllll.

  1. I loved all of these takes 🙂 So very cool about your brother! Can’t wait to start Gran Hotel (like I have time on my hands…) And can’t help with “big girl” gifts. I’m just going to steal your ideas for my own girls in 4 years 🙂
And thanks for including a baby pic (though I totally have to admit I’m blown away by the fact that your newborn is getting baths! I’ve found I don’t have time for that sort of thing with No. 5 and think I’ve given James 3 baths in his whole 11 mos. He doesn’t even smell bad…. well, at least, I don’t think so 😉 )

  2. I feel like everyone is blogging less. So maybe that has something to do with it? Instagram is changing everything.

We sent out cards already but for us we couldn’t get a perfect picture of both kids. (Because you can’t make a newborn look at a camera.) We just did individual pictures on the same background. OR just take each kid’s best picture from the year and montage it up. Everyone just wants to see their cute, it doesn’t matter if it matches. 🙂

  3. She is so SO cute!!! Seriously, you guys make the cutest kids!

And I’m totally at a loss for older girls… Do they play with dolls? Can you get them those matching kid-doll outfits? That’s on my list for Cecilia one of these years because I know she would DIE but I don’t know what age girls stop playing with dolls!

  4. Super cool about your brother.

    For big girls..some ideas are
    -arts/craft supplies
    -rollar skates/rollar blades
-American Girl doll clothing or the dolls (we’ve gotten them cheap off Ebay in the past)

My 10-year old is getting a homemade puppet theatre (just made out of a cardboard display board…if she likes it we may look for something sturdier in the future) and a few puppets. She loves to make up stories.

  5. Ahhh! Your brother! So awesome! I’m backing away from FB a bit and don’t have IG so you can imagine how out of the loop I feel now that no one (including me) is blogging much! But that is so cool! And so is that sweet babe!

  6. That is SO cool about your brother!!!

I have not ever done a photo card. Ever. Everyone in my family does those. My siblings, nieces, nephews, my daughter with my precious grandkids. I just can’t plan it far enough ahead of time. I just get stressed with everything else going on at the holidays.

Yup!! That is a gorgeous, gorgeous baby!! 🙂
