Books, blogging breaks, chit chat, Charleston

Sometimes, when you take an extended break from blogging, it behooves a blogger to make some sort of explanation or excuse.

And sometimes, you just jump right in.

The Sleep Away Camp I Always Dreamed Of

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of going to camp.  I have a feeling this dream was heavily influenced by The Parent Trap (the Hayley Mills version, thankyouverymuch)Even though my parents were (and are) married, the romanticism was not lost on me. Alas, for whatever reason, my parents never sent me away to camp.  (The reason may have been that I never actually asked.  At any rate, I don’t remember them saying no.)  But, don’t cry for me Argentina!  Last week I took aalllll mah’ girls to camp and we had quite the adventure. (Forgive the unedited iPhone photos. Better than nothing…???)

While I was away

Kevin and the boys had a blast.  In fact, I’m pretty sure they didn’t want me to come home.

Ch-ch-ch-charleston, here we come!

Wednesday morning, Kevin and I will be taking Rosie to Charleston, SC.  It’s a combination trip: celebrating our anniversary (Our 13th was last Monday!) and I’ll be attending the Edel Gathering.  I haven’t been this excited for a trip in a very long time.

To make it even more exciting, we’re flying first class on the way there!  Wheeeeee!  And no, I will not be providing bribes to the people near us.  I doubt Rosie will fuss much, but if she does… well, that’s what babies do and I don’t feel the need to pretend otherwise. (So there.)

Must-read book

Last week I was away from virtually all internet and boy, was it blissful.  I don’t realize how much I need it unless it’s forced upon me.

Anyway, I read this book and man, I cannot stop gushing about it.  I honestly do not know how many people I’ve talked to about it, but I have to tell you, too.

Saint John Paul the Great: His Five Loves was exactly the book I needed to read last week.  Need a hero?  JPII’s got you covered.  His writing on love is just about the most profound thing I’ve found outside the Bible and, oh… just read it.  Please? It’s quick enough, and “inspiring” doesn’t even do it justice.

Throwing my hat in the What We’re Reading Wednesday ring. Make sure to visit Jessica for more book recs!

Independence Day

Happy belated Fourth of July! We went to our local library and watched the fireworks with a few (thousand) of our good friends.

And Rosie wishes you all kinds of peace and relaxation.

That’s all for now.  I’ll be back next week with lots of photos from Charleston, I hope. in the meantime, keep up with me on Instagram and/or Facebook.

  1. Have a super fantastic time at Edel! Wish I could be there – still campaigning for a Midwest venue in 2016 🙂

  2. Looks as if camp was a blast! Makes me want to go. 🙂 Enjoy Edel. Wish I could go and meet, greet, and mingle with all the other ladies. Have a safe trip and have fun!!

  3. St. John Paul the Great’s teachings on LOVE are so life-changing. I wish I could get every person to read them. The Holy Spirit was definitely speaking through him to the culture we currently live in. Sorely needed words.
Glad you were finally able to enjoy summer camp! 😉

  6. Yes – that book is fabulous! Forget that “Magic of Tidying Up” lady – this book is what made me want less stuff in my life.

  8. So I am totally almost finished with the St JPll book you recommended and it is beyond awe-inspiring. I am a convert and honestly have had no relationship with JPll at all. But, now I am in love with him! I am just crying through the whole book- which is silly because it’s not sad at all, just so inspiring. The chapter on redemptive suffering is the best I have ever read on that subject. Thank you so much for sharing, Micaela! 🙂

  9. Hi Micaela! It was so great to meet you at Edel 15! I didn’t realize it was your anniversary too! Happy belated anniversary! I enjoyed gazing at your beautiful little baby girl at Edel! Wish we could have chatted longer, but it was great to meet you in real life! It looks like your girl camp was a blast and your children are precious! God bless!
