Word: Theme Thursday

A couple of months ago, Gianna got her ears pierced.  Since the holes healed, one of her favorite activities is switching earrings.  Thanks to her Mimi and my friend Kristina, she has lots of choices.  It’s no wonder that we find earrings and earring backs all over the house.  (She takes after me in her forgetfulness and lack-of-natural-cleaning ability.)

Yesterday, I was rushing the kids around to get out of the house.  I wanted to get up to the community center to sign them up for some lessons and get back to begin school before…, oh you know… before dinnertime?  Even though they were dying to take these classes, they could hardly be bothered to put their shoes on, much less walk out the door.  As I got increasingly agitated, I began to stomp around the house.  These ingrates.  They don’t even care about what I do for them.  Why should I even bother?

Through the haze of self-righteous indignation, I began to notice a click.  Step click step click step.  Every step I took (stomped) sent forth a repetitive click from the bottom of my right shoe.  Perturbed but (literally) without missing a step, I whipped off my right flip flop and headed to the kitchen trash to toss what was sure to be a cracked Lego.

It was an earring.  My eyes welled up with tears and my throat bubbled with laughter at my God who teases me so.

Isn’t Love like that?  Shiny in the muck and the dust? Small but insistent, quietly clicking under our feet: love, love, love.

So I took Love in my hand and I shined up.  And I thanked the Word for His not-so-subtle reminder.

  5. And then you offered up a prayer of thanks that you were wearing flip flops… There may have been a different lesson if that Love earring had pierced your foot.

  6. This is the sweetest ever!
