Swim: a very belated Theme Thursday

Last week I said I would join in for Theme Thursday, and by golly, I meant it.  Even if it is 4 days late.

In all our past summers as parents, we’ve spent several days each week in my in-laws’ pool.  Wrinkled fingers, brittle hair, and suits that wear out within a couple months are small prices to pay for that bit of heaven known as “sitting in the shade while your kids enjoy themselves for hours on end.”

But not this summer.  Oh, no.  A construction project began last fall and has (predictably) taken 1000 times longer than planned.  My summer haven currently looks like this:

Not exactly enticing.

Not exactly enticing.

So we got a membership to the YMCA.  And while it has some great benefits (cheap, free childcare while I work out, close to home) the pool environment leaves something to be desired.  Am I the only one who hates indoor pools?  I can only stand to be in one for a little while before the smell of the chlorinated water drowns out any fake enthusiasm I originally was able to muster.   So, as a bribe, I take the kids for 20-30 minutes after my workout and they feel like they got something out of the trip, too.  But mama’s not sitting poolside, oh no, so it’s not exactly a replacement.

Fortunately, my in-laws’ are a) well-connected, and b) good at granting wishes.  They contacted some friends and asked if we could come and use their gorgeous pool from time to time.  The answer was yes.

My very favorite memory from our childhood pool was when my dad would throw us as high as he could.  It made me feel amazingly free, got my heart racing, and proved what I already knew: my dad could do anything.  Anything at all.

Head on over to Clan Donaldson for timelier and no doubt safer versions of the Swim theme.

P.S. So much to chat about, but my chores are staring me in the face.  I want to tell you about my talk, and about my anniversary, and about several great articles I’ve read recently.  But alas, I must away.  Until tomorrow, friends, when Kendra will share with us how she homeschools.

  1. It’s funny what a difference climates make. I love indoor pools but the outdoor pools are few and far between and not open for very long. So I suppose it’s what I’m used to you know? But my your kiddos look like they had a GREAT time swimming!
