Silhouette: Theme Thursday

It’s never good to start off a blog post with an apology/excuse, but here I go:

To all who linked up last week, thank you! And I’m sorry I haven’t visited you yet.  It’s the very first thing on my computer to-do list, right after I finish up all the Halloween/All Saints costumes. {insert gritting teeth emoticon}

(Thank you all for all your prayers for my granny. Her rosary and funeral were last week and they were absolutely beautiful.)

Onward. This week’s theme was silhouette, and I cannot wait to see what you brought me.  Let’s take a look at my original photo:

We are finally starting to get our beautiful fall sunsets. This was taken last night, in haste, to catch the sun before it went down.  I didn’t follow the rules of silhouette photography, so I had to do some editing afterwards.

I used PicMonkey because I didn’t feel like wrestling with Photoshop.  Photoshop is more powerful, but PicMonkey is way more user friendly, and honestly, for my blog, it’s probably all I need.  I do have the paid subscription, and I love it, but I used it for a long time without it and it was almost as wonderful.

What I did: First, I cropped it a bit to focus on the subject (Gabriel).  Next, I went to Exposure and dragged the Shadows slider all the way to the left.  This made everything in the foreground much darker. which was exactly what I wanted.  Finally, I decided that the power lines were bugging me, so I used the Clone tool (paid subscription only) and mostly hid them.  Honestly, my luck with Clone in both PicMonkey and Photoshop is hit or miss. This time it turned out alright, but don’t look too closely.

What do you think?

Time to show me yours!  Share them in a blog post or post them on Instagram with the (new and improved) hashtag #ThemeThursdayPhotos!

Don’t forget, sweet friends, to visit the other linkers! It’s way more fun to go through this together, don’t you think?

FOR NEXT WEEK

In November we’re going to work on portrait photography. Our first topic is catchlights, and as far as I’m concerned, these are what can make or break as close-up portrait.  Here is a great intro to catchlights, but there are many great posts out there.  If you find another one, share it in the comments!

  4. But the real question is if Gabe screamed that he was king of the world? And would you look at you incorporate a sun flare again? My oh my, hostess with the mostest is getting all fancy on us. 🙂 Love your picture.

  5. One of these days I’ll try PicMonkey. I used to use Photoshop, but that was back when I had a ‘free’ subscription. Now, I use Gimp…but I can honestly say that I mostly just crop and add the watermark with it!

    I like the before/after, and how you did it. Thanks for sharing those! 🙂
