Self-Portrait: Theme Thursday

This theme couldn’t have come at a worse time for my self-esteem.  I nearly had a break-down this week, when after 5 weeks of running and working out, I’ve gained weight and inches.  To add insult to injury, my face looks like I am a teenager in the throes of puberty.  (Not my puberty, mind you, because God thought it would be funny to give me clear skin when everyone else was zitty and then give me rosacea-riddled adult acne to, you know, teach me some humility.  Or something.)

But, onward and upward.  I love me some Theme Thursdays, so I play even when it’s hard.  Last-Minute Leslie that I am, I hustled the kids out to the balcony in the fading afternoon sunshine today to help me get the perfect selfie.  I admit to clicking around a bit for some inspiration, but I also came up with a few pointers of my own.  (I used a timer for all my photos this week.  No mirror shots, etc)

My random tips for a better self-portrait:

1.  Aim your camera at a fixed location, like a wall or a corner.  That way you know where to hop back in after you’ve set the timer.  This is difficult when you don’t a have a reference point.

2. For women, wear some lipstick, even if you have to raid your daughters’ dress-up make-up.  (Not that I had to resort to that… nooooo, not me.)  Unless your name is Snow White, bare lips often look washed out and may give you the appearance of a wraith.  Along the same lines,  wear some earrings or other accessory of interest, even if you’re like me and have to dig waaaaaay back on your dusty closet shelf to get to your jewelry box.  It give the camera something else to look at besides your double chin.

3.  Get some help.  It really helps to have a subject to focus on when you set up the shots.  For all the shots that I just aimed and ran into, I got blurry results.  If I had one of my sweet kids sit in my spot for me, I was more likely to get a decent focus.

4. Use the timer with multiple shots.  Mine can be set to take three consecutive shots.  That way, if I blinked, I usually still got one okay shot.

5. Don’t be surprised if your favorite shot ends up being with the very last one, in which you finally succumb to your daughters’ wish for you to – please please pleeeeeeease – wear the candy corn earrings.  Arg.

6. Photoshop with abandon.  Look, I’m all for “real” portraits.  I like wrinkles and crinkles and such.  But this week I thought my self-esteem had taken enough of a hit.  Sooo yeah, I blurred out most of my acne and brightened my eyes.  So sue me.

  1. Beautiful!

  2. Looooove the shot with the scarf!

  3. Why are we all so insecure? I drew a picture of myself because I didn’t want to take one. Pathetic. God created you, He loves you, and He doesn’t make mistakes 🙂

  4. I love your tips- such good stuff.
And I love how much bravery it takes to show pictures of ourselves.
Mostly, I love your eyes. If I knew nothing about you, I could tell you were a kind, happy person from your eyes.

    • My compulsive honesty requires me to point out that I did in fact “brighten” my eyes in these shots. But I’ll take your sweet compliment anyway.

  5. So where were you with the tips like, yesterday?????

You are so gorgeous, your eyes are unspeakable. And you know, for whatever reason, the picture with the scarf below your eyes is so revealing. Beautiful.

  6. I know this is so not the point, but I really love your earrings. You’re beautiful with or without them no doubt about it.

  7. I absolutely LOVE the second picture. Beautiful!

    • Thanks, C. It’s probably my favorite too, but I was still self-conscious because I don’t know if it seemed too posed or artificial.

  8. Oh my goodness, those are wonderful! I love the last one and those earrings really rock! You have beautiful eyes!

  9. Your eyes! Give them to me!

    • Funny story. When I was a teenager, one of my neighbors was trying to get her two year old’s attention to discuss some inappropriate behavior. Upon hearing the phrase, “Give me your eyes,” he promptly covered his face with his hands and started screaming. “NOOOOO! MY eyes! Don’t wanna give dem!”

  10. These pictures are great! I love the one with the scarf! Beautiful!

  11. All of these pictures are beautiful, but I especially love the second one because it accentuates your amazing EYES! And you’re not even wearing any make-up on them, are you?

  12. You are lovely. I feel like I know your soul better from looking at these three pictures of your face (really, your eyes).

  13. Ah – love the candy corn earrings! 🙂

The top is my favorite but your eyes in the middle one – wowza!

  14. Woman, you OWN beauty!!!! and the candy corn earrings….rocking ’em!!!
