Recess: Theme Thursday

I hope you like a good visual story.

A few weeks ago, I put two and two together and realized that one of my beautiful kids struggles from deficient sensory integration. This isn’t an official diagnosis, by any means, but when the shoe fits, a mama knows. Oh, yes. She knows.

As a means for helping my sweet child figure out the world, I’ve been attempting to include more sensory play within our day. Yesterday we had a ball putting beads into play dough, smashing it, and then picking them out again. Today, with the “Recess” Theme Thursday in mind, I thought some outdoor play was in order.

The shots below aren’t my favorite in terms of composition, or lighting, or focus. But the pure enjoyment my girls got out of playing in the mud, and then the water… Well, I hope at least that shows up clearly.

As a funny side note: the boys… my pirates, my cavemen, my honey badgers… They barely played in the mud at all.

The blank canvas, and a little bit of paint.

No fun. No fun at all.

Juuuuuuuuuust before it got crazy, I knew we were reaching the point when someone got hurt or mad, so we moved on to the next sensory piece.

The kids came up with a water game. I’ll call it Duck and Cover.

  2. I can’t let my kids see those mud pictures because they would be soooo jealous! Their mom hyperventilates just seeing pictures of your kids all muddy 🙂

  5. The feet in mud picture is the best, second to the two girls being silly together. They are so sweet, and this is a super idea.

The thing about dirt, it always comes off.

  6. LOL! Had to pause from reading this to rinse off my mud pie baker son.
Looks like great fun was had by all!!

  7. This looks so much fun!!! Even though the mud covered bodies is freaking me out a little bit. My fave shot is the feet in the mud and the last with the water spray. Awesome. 🙂

  8. Oh I love the mud photos. So much fun! I would love to get my boys in some mud, but it would attract wasps and such and that would be no fun at all.

  12. Such a fun post! My kids would be so jealous if I let them see all that mud. 🙂 Have you read the Out of Sync Child and The Out of Sync Child Has Fun? They have so many great ideas for dealing with sensory issues– how to create a fun sensory integration program using regular household items.
