Focal point: Theme Thursday

Hi, y’all!  Welcome to Theme Thursday. I keep forgetting to mention it so I’m going to get to it first: These Theme Thursday photography link-ups are set to stay open until the end of the month.  So don’t think you’re out of luck if you don’t get to it right away.  And there’s no rule that says you can’t combine the topics, so jump on in whenever you get some time!

Today we’re talking about focal points, and as I mentioned last week, I really had no idea what I was doing this week.  I suppose my style leans very heavily toward portraiture, so the focal points in my pictures are usually obvious: people and/or their parts.

I tried a couple of things this week. First, I tried to find something interesting outside to photograph. Aliya’s new Adirondack chair was about the most interesting thing in our dormant yard.

But the bow felt a little obvious.

And now it sort of blends in with the background.

I backed up a little and tried raising the aperture.

And then a little someone got jealous that the chair was getting photographed and she wasn’t.

There goes the photo shoot.

I think my default for focal points is probably positioning. I was left unimpressed with my above practice.

I gave up and headed inside and Aliya was practicing guitar.

Pink nail polish helps.  😉

Eidelweiss, my favorite song she plays.

I think the lighting places the focal point on the guitar.

This one, even though it’s a little blurry, puts the focus on her face.

I think the last one is my favorite, because, well, portraits.  I love how her face is lit from the side. But that pink nail polish + her favorite flannel shirt is pretty darn cute, too.

And because I just love this Insta photo…

2 things I’m digging lately: my new Bible and my baby boy Dutch. Had the 20-week ultrasound today and everything looks ship-shape. And he is definitely a boy. 😂 He looked right at the ultrasound wand and I nearly burst burst into tears. “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wondrous deeds.” Psalm 9. #readthebibleinayear #Dutchbaby

Next week: Before we get to the link up, I wanted to chat about next week.  I don’t have anything specific in mind except that I think photos that are visually pleasing are generally simpler in nature.  Zoom in before you shoot, crop out clutter after the fact, change your aperture to blur out distractions, etc. Any other suggestions or ideas?

#ThemeThursdayPhotos, baby.  Bring it.

  1. I love the guitar pictures and the light on her face works perfectly. I also love the progression of photos from empty chair to center of attention in chair. She obviously wanted to be the focal point!

  2. Yep, that last one really has something. That’s like a graduation slideshow picture for sure.

  4. All of these look amazing but I love the painted nails one too. The one with the light on her face is tied as well. 🙂

  5. Love the guitar photos, especially the close ups. I may just get a post up this week to play along for rule of thirds and focal points. I’m a little stumped on simplicity too; I guess what you suggested? Try to have nothing in the photo but the subject and a blank background/wall?
