Five Favorites: Advent Edition

I know, I know, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, and here I am, jumping the gun and talking about Advent.  But it’s so wonderful! And meaningful!  And sooooooooon!  And besides, it’s not like I’m celebrating Advent early.  Just getting excited about it.

Cradle to Cross Wreath

I can’t remember if it was last year or the year before that I found this Cradle to Cross Wreath online, but either way, I fall in love every time I see it. Alas, I neglected – again – to set aside money to buy one this year.  Maybe I should take up a collection?

UPDATE: because I have the bestest in-laws in the WORLD, on of these wreaths is on its way to my house! Yes, I’m grateful. So grateful I cried. Thanks, Mimi and Papa!

We’ve accumulated some pretty special Advent-themed books over the last couple of years.  I’m so excited to break them out in a week and a half.  This was my favorite new buy last year:

I straight-up cried my eyes out.  Such a beautiful story.  For more about what we’ll be reading, you can check out my Advent Booklist from last year.  Bonus: this year we have a huge library nearby, whereas for the last 2 years we had only a teeny one.  More books!  For free!  Yippee!  (Psssst:  Hey Jessica, does this count as a What We’re Reading Wednesday post? Yes?  Great, thanks!)

Holy Heroes Jesse Tree Adventures

I’m so silly excited about this DVD.  This, along with the Jesse Tree ornaments from a swap I participated in, our Advent Wreath, and the books I mentioned above will comprise the bulk of our Advent family activities.  My kids LOVE TV and they rarely watch it, so I think this will be really special and fun for them.

 3 Reasons I Love Advent

Every month I host a link-up called “3 Reasons I Love Catholicism.”  It’s been a wonderful way to learn more about our faith and it has provided me with some much-needed inspiration.

 3 Reasons Advent

For the December edition, we’ll be focusing on Advent.  What do you love about Advent?  What are your family traditions, special foods, books you read, etc?  Write a blog post and link it up here between Friday November 29 and Tuesday December 24.

A Photo of a Beautiful Baby

Unrelated to Advent, but a photo I took that makes me gasp with joy.  Meet Bennett:

Can you even believe his eyes?!  I can’t!  (Regarding the watermark: I don’t usually bother to mark my stuff because a) I’m not so great that I imagine people will want to steal my photos, and b) I’m putting all my bizness on the internet and I’m realistic about what that means.  However, Bennett isn’t my baby, so he gets a watermark.  Back off, photo poachers!)

  1. I covet that cradle to cross wreath with the white hot covetousness that is embarrassing for a religious article. If I don’t link up with 3 reasons THIS month, slap me. (or, like, remind me)
And awesome photo! I need to start watermarking…and then I decide that I can let go and not stress.
    Love these.

    • This made me laugh so hard, Maia. And now you’re going to be mad at me because my MIL just emailed that she bought it for me for Christmas. You’re welcome to come camp out for Advent! The more the merrier!

  2. I’ve been wanting that cradle to cross wreath, too! I’ve even toyed with the idea of trying to make one (from clay). But we don’t have a place to put it, so one more year goes by without it.

And I agree, that Bennett is gorgeous. =)

    • Ha! Last year I bought some clay to make it and it was a disaster. An unmitigated disaster. That’s not saying yours would be, but I know better than to trust myself this year. 🙂

  3. We bought the Cradle to Cross wreath two years ago and I still get giddy every time I get to set it out. It has added so much to our liturgical year celebrations. So, yes, collection time! 🙂

    • Well, I just got an email from my mother in law that she bought us the Cradle to Cross Wreath, so it looks like I won’t have to move into your house for Advent after all! 🙂

  4. Yes! I need more advent books – ours so far have just been board books and I’m ready to add some “big kid” books to the mix now that John Paul and Cecilia can sit still long enough for more involved stories 🙂

And you’re absolutely not jumping the gun talking about Advent before Thanksgiving – it’s just a week-and-a-half away!!! I need to get out my bin of Christmas/Advent things and start sorting and figuring out what to replace & what to add… Last year was a bare-minimum year because the twins had just been born, so this year is the year to be more intentional!

    • Do you have the board book “Who’s Coming to Our House?” That is one of our all-time favorites.

You reminded me I need to get out my bin. I’m not sure I have Advent candles!

  5. Wow that is a beautiful shot, seriously. Will definitely try to get a hold of the Godden book, love to cry my eyes out!
