Advent/Christmas Books

I’m trying out the Amazon Affiliate program.  This means that if you click through these links below and buy these books or any others, I get a small portion of the price at no cost to you.  I figure since I  a) regularly recommend books, and b) spend a whole lotta dough on Amazon, this program made sense.  We’ll see how it pans out.  In the meantime, thanks for supporting our little family.  🙂

We have a box of picture books that I keep with our Advent decorations.  I began collecting in earnest 2 years ago when we were in South Korea where the military library was small and sorely lacking in quality reading material.  I’ve added a handful of books every year.  I wish I could buy a gazillion books at once, but for some reason I’m expected to follow a “budget” and be “reasonable.”  Whatever.

This year we decided to give the kids books on the Feast of St. Nicholas (Dec. 6).  I just received these in the mail tonight, so I can’t review most of them yet, but they all received high ratings on Amazon and most were referred by Catholic sites or books.

For the kids:

Ezekiel, age 2: Who is Coming to Our House?

We actually had this book years ago until it died a painful death-by-toddler. I didn’t want Zeke to miss out on the fun, so we’re replacing it.

Gabriel, age 4: Room for a Little One: A Christmas Tale

Aliya, age 6: Our Lady of Guadalupe

Gianna, age 8: Lucia, Saint of Light

For the whole family: Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend

For me:

Disclaimer: This book was written by a family friend (a priest in the same order as my brothers) and my very own parents gave input on its writing.  All the opinions are my own, but I thought I should put it out there.

This Advent, I’m reading (and praying with) Holy Spouses Rosary book by Fr. Larry Toschi, O.S.J.

The Holy Spouses rosary is a a devotional prayer asking for Mary and Joseph’s intercession.  It replaces the traditional Hail Mary with a prayer patterned in the same way.

Mary, full of grace, and Joseph, son of David; honor to you, Mother of God, and to you, guardian of the Redeemer.  Eternal praise to the child with whom you formed a family, Jesus, the Promised One.  Holy spouses, pray for us sinners, our families and communities, now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.

The book is comprised of an introduction and 10 chapters meditating on the Holy Spouses mysteries.  Each meditation lists the biblical background for the meditation, personal applications, a contemplation, and instructions on how to pray it.  I suppose that’s a dry way of letting you know that the book itself is a pretty easy read.  Read the inspirational introduction and then git to prayin’.

Speaking as a spouse, this prayer is extremely powerful.  We all know that marriage is difficult, and that being united in prayer with your spouse is beneficial.  This holy devotion (which is not meant to replace the traditional rosary) would be the perfect way for a husband and wife to ask, together, for the intercession of the Holy Family.

Note: if any of you bloggers are interested in reviewing this book for your blog, let me know and I’ll get you a copy, gratis.  I know people in high places.
