I’m Catholic because…

Tonight as I was putting Rosalie to sleep, I sat rocking her and thinking about all the gifts my faith has given me. It occurred to me that since I let my 3 Reasons (I love Catholicism) series go, I haven’t talked much about the “why” of my faith.  This week seems like as good a time as any to reflect on it.  Forgive me if I wax a bit poetical. It’s just on my heart that way.

I’m Catholic…

because meeting my God in the Eucharist overwhelms me with love.

because receiving His mercy through Confession brings me to my knees in gratitude.

because sitting next to me in the pew and standing before me on the altar I see, not saints, but sinners who refuse to give up, who long for God and seek Him where He may be found.

because no matter how many times I open the Bible I never cease to be amazed at how God speaks directly to me.

because fasting and feasting are both good for the soul.

because the writings of the Church fathers, the saints, and the Doctors of the Church never fail to inspire and challenge me.

because this is a Church for my mind, for my heart, for my body, and for my soul.

because Jesus Christ was a real person who was born, and lived, and died, all with love for me in His most merciful heart.

because in Christ and His Church I have found the foil for my pride, the challenge to my selfishness, the companion for my loneliness, the answer for all my deepest longings.

The answer, of course, is Him, always Him, and I can see Him as clearly as I see the sky on a clear day, through the eyes of my beautiful Church.
